COMPOSITION

Let’s talk about how we can improve photos by setting the subject properly. Framing the subject is more than getting the angles right, meaning, if we want out subject to pop out, we need to add some elements to make sure that the viewer’s eyes will be directed where we want it to be, and produce an astonishing photo.

This is the basic rule of photography, and by using this technique, we can create a more pleasing and balanced photo.

We divide the frame into 9 equal parts using horizontal and vertical lines. By doing this, we create certain intersections in the frame and that’s where we put important elements, because our eyes are naturally drawn to these intersections.

For landscape photography, we can use the horizontal lines to line up the horizon of our scene. 2/3 of the frame is commonly filled with what’s more interesting such as city landscapes.

Although it is an essential rule, there are times where breaking this rule will result into a catchier photo. So don’t let yourself be limited by this rule, and be more artistic!

Using frames will give your photo depth. It separates foreground from middle ground and background. Rather than putting your subject in the open, natural frames also leads the eyes of viewers into the subject, making it stand out instantly.

Using leading lines subtly guides the eyes by using natural lines which draws the eyes of viewers towards the subject. Leading lines also manipulates the focus of the photo which emphasizes depth of field. The subject may be at the end of the line, or in the middle where lines would be directed the the subject. Many lines can also be used to draw viewers’ attention.

Using multiple techniques creates a strong composition. Combining these things will definitely boost your photography into a whole new level. However, these rules are not constant and you don’t necessarily need to follow all of these at once to produce an amazing photo. So feel free to roll your creativity out and use what’s best for every situation
